Multiple methods and techniques have been employed to heat 55 gallon drums and other industrial containers over the past 5 decades. Old methods involved wrapping a heated metal strip (called a band heater) around the outside of the container. Dangerous and ineffective, band heaters and immersion heaters are being replaced with a new method called GreenHeat Technology.
Powerblanket LLC has patented a heat spreading technology that delivers a barrier of uniform heat to temperature sensitive materials. Pictured below is a BH55-130 Powerblanket Drum Heater. Q: How do I keep my water barrels from freezing in cold winter temperatures?

Q: What if my materials are flammable or toxic. Can I use an electric heater?
A: We’re not aware of any explosion proof electric heaters, but Powerblanket is UL/CSA certified and is used by several large gas & oil companies. Powerblanket is also used to wrap chemical tanks, gas valves, and oil pumps.
Q: Does the Powerblanket get hot enough to melt ice and snow, or is it only used for keeping pipes & drums above freezing?
A: Powerblanket is effective at both preventing and thawing frozen pipes and drums. The extra hot Powerblanket can achieve temperatures in excess of 150 degrees F. Powerblanket is a multi-layer heating device which consists of several layers to achieve it’s revolutionary results. First, Powerblanket starts with an inner carbon fiber material that spreads heat evenly over a large area. No more HOT or COLD spots… just an even, consistant heat. Next they use industrial grade insulation to keep the heat in and the cold out. Their heating design is patented and kind of a “secret sauce” so we won’t talk too much about that here in this article. The entire blanket is wrapped in a UL rated winter/waterproof grade vinyl that really does a super job of keeping moisture away from the heating element inside the blanket.
